The Plant in the Corner

So we’ve had this one little corner in our living room that’s just been sittin’ there empty for years. And honestly, I never thought it needed anything. It didn’t bother me. I thought it looked fine. Clean. Open. Simple.

But then, outta nowhere, my wife ordered this fake plant off Amazon. Sixty bucks. Nothing special. Just some greenery in a woven basket. She set it in that corner with a little lamp beside it, and I didn’t think twice about it at the time.

Now let me pause and say this... my wife has always had a natural gift for decorating. She just sees stuff I don’t. She’s never had any kind of formal training or anything, but man, she can walk into a room and instantly know what it needs. She’s made our house feel like a home in more ways than I can count.

Anyway, that Friday I came home from work, walked in the front door, and for some reason, the whole space just felt different. Warmer. Cozier. Like it wrapped its arms around you when you walked in. The shadows from the lamp hit the leaves just right and danced up the wall, and for the first time I realized, yeah... that corner actually needed something all along.

It got me thinking, how many things in our lives do we just leave “as is” because they seem fine? We get used to how things are and stop looking for ways to grow, improve, or even be stretched a little.

Whether it’s your job, your walk with God, your relationships, your health. Whatever it is, we can get comfortable. And comfort’s not always bad, but sometimes it keeps us from seeing what we’re missing.

That little plant, as simple and insignificant as it is, reminded me that sometimes the smallest things can completely shift the atmosphere. You don’t always know what you need until it’s there.

So don’t stop just because life feels settled. Keep moving. Keep seeking. There might be more peace, more love, more purpose right around the corner. And yeah, maybe it’s not a huge life change. Maybe it’s something small. But small things add up. Small things matter.

So here’s to the things we didn’t know we needed. Even if they show up as a fake plant in the corner of the room.

Thanks for reading.
